We have recently completed a group trip to South Africa. Nine people joined us for the two week trip and enjoyed some of South Africa’s highlights, including Cape Town’s famous sites, beaches and food, and the world famous vineyards and restaurants of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. The last few days of the trip were spent at an exclusive 5 star game lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve where we did two game drives a day with a private game ranger and tracker who ensured that we saw the Big Five as well as many other animals.

Part One covered our time in Cape Town. Part Two will cover our time in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

After spending a week in Cape Town, we drove to Stellenbosch for a day of wine tasting. We visited a number of wine estates and sampled some of their best wines while enjoying views of the vineyards. The highlight for me was the wine and chocolate paired tasting at Waterford – something a bit different. The estate makes chocolate to complement each wine they serve. We then had a long lunch at Delaire Graff wine estate overlooking the valley, shaded by a large oak tree.

We then checked in to our boutique hotel in Franschhoek, and enjoyed the pool and outside area for the rest of the afternoon. A few in the group managed to fit in a spa treatment before we met for dinner that evening at the hotel.

The next day we went to the Boschendal wine estate, famous for its upmarket picnics called ‘le pique nique’. We went to their tasting room for some pre-lunch wine tasting, and then spent the afternoon enjoying our picnic in the  estate grounds.  After lunch, some of the group went back to the hotel to relax, and others went to Franschhoek Main Road to browse in the boutique shops. Dinner that evening was at the world renowned restaurant Reubens.

It was an action packed holiday of sightseeing, enjoying food and wine, relaxing on the beach, and seeing the Big 5 up close and personal. Stay tuned for Part 3, an overview of our safari in Madikwe Game Reserve.
